How to Choose an Ultralight Tent

Start with three things: how many people, what weather, and whether you already carry trekking poles. Those answers narrow the field fast.

Next, think about pitching. If you camp on rock slabs or wooden platforms, a freestanding tent saves you trouble. If you’re on soft ground, a staked shelter saves weight.

Buying criteria

  • Capacity vs how much room you actually want
  • Typical weather: wind, rain, snow load, bugs
  • Trekking poles you already carry vs dedicated tent poles
  • Campsite surfaces you’ll usually pitch on
  • Your weight goal for the whole Big Three (shelter, pack, sleep system)
